Mosquitoes: A Major Rival for Human Health

Published on by Corrado

Mosquitoes are entirely skilled in their job of biting people through the specialized sensors they have. Normally  they have a chemical sensor that senses carbon dioxide and lactic acid, a visual sensor that can sense the light and a heat sensor that aid them to identify the warm blooded living things. All these facilities along with a piercing and sucking mouth can easily help them to identify their prey. When a mosquito bites, it inserts its saliva into the body of the victim. The saliva is an anticoagulant that avoids the clotting of blood. After the bite a small amount of its saliva may be in the victim’s blood which can create immune response in the victim’s body. This immune response is liable for the swelling and itching associated with mosquito bites. Itching may end till the immune system has breakup all the proteins in the saliva.

Mosquitoes are the deadliest vector of harmful diseases which are killing millions of people each year. These insects are members of culicidae family and there are about 2700 species of mosquitoes known today. Only the female mosquitoes bite as they need blood for developing their eggs with the proteins present in the blood. Males normally feed on the plant nectar. Mosquitoes usually breed in standing water. Female mosquitoes lay a raft of 50 to 300 eggs in water or in any substance suspended in the water. These eggs finally become an adult after going through different lifecycles like larva and pupa. There are different categories of mosquitoes known today. Most common amongst them include aedes, anopheles and culex. Mosquito are the carriers of countless deadly diseases and contributes to maximum human death compared to any other organism through its infectious bite.

Most commonly caused diseases are malaria, yellow fever, encephalitis and dengue fever. There are different types of encephalitis like louis, western equine, la crosse and westnile. West nile virus is one of the most wide spread form which is in charge for millions of death world wide. A competent mechanism for mosquito control is the only way for preventing these types of diseases. As mosquitoes necessitate standing water for completing its lifecycle, sufficient measures should be taken to empty the sources of standing water in your surroundings. A broad range of insect repellents are also available in the market which can offer protection from bites for long hours.

Most of the mosquito repellents existing today use DEET as the major ingredient. But Deet is found to be quite perilous for human health. So a better approach would be to employ natural mosquito repellents made from natural oils so that you need not have to worry about the debilitating effects of DEET.  A mosquito repellent soap from skin armour named skin armour deep woods outdoor soap is found to be the best among natural mosquito repellents due to its skill to protect you for long eight hours.
