Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus- A Big Threat to the World

West Nile virus (WNV) belongs to the family Flaviviridae. It is mainly found in tropical and temperate regions. The virus gets into human body mainly through mosquito bite. The fact is that not all the mosquitoes cause West Nile Virus to the human body. The bite of infected mosquitoes will only cause West Nile viruses diseases. In most parts of the USA, the risk of mosquitoes causing WNV will be high during the months of July to September. The possibility of this disease is highest for people over the age of 50, young children, and those with weak immune system.

The main symptoms of West Nile virus varies according to the persons. Usually, the symptoms appear between five and 15 days after a bite from an infected mosquito. In the early stages, the symptoms may include fever, headache, neck and back stiffness, muscle ache, tiredness, joint pain, swollen glands, rashes, etc. These symptoms may last many weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent.

Once bitten by an infected mosquito the West Nile virus multiplies in a person's blood system. In some cases, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and enters the brain. The virus then obstructs the normal functioning of the central nervous system and reasons swelling and inflammation of the brain tissue.

The effective way to get away from West Nile Virus and its harmful effects are to prevent mosquito bite. Personal protection and reducing mosquito habitats will help reduce the risk of WNV to you and your family. It is not easy to identify infected mosquitoes and normal mosquitoes. So, it is always better to control the population of mosquitoes. Reduce the chances of standing water where mosquitoes breed. Most mosquitoes are very active at dusk and dawn, so, limit outdoor activities during these times. If you need to be outside when mosquitoes are active, wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing with long pants, long-sleeves and socks.

You should use DEET free mosquito repellent anytime you are outdoors. For any repellent, be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions for use.
